Sacré Combas, Holy Combas
"Sacré Combas, Holy Combas"
This quest for spirituality also becomes apparent in the decision to work on a more monumental scale, sometimes on works of over five metres long (the size of a small chapel), reminiscent of mural paintings of the Middle Ages and 17th century baroque, which Combas undertook from the end of the eighties. From the beginning of the nineties, a new set of themes appears in his work, in which he makes reference to both oriental spirituality, such as bouddhisme (Mediator) and to the christian religion (Virgin and Child of Venise, The Road of Cavalry Combas style, The Archangel). Others still (Black Sun, The Warrior Soul, Tournament of Hearts) are imbued with an atmosphere reminiscent of medieval legends. (view more...)

Tąpies, by Dan Cameron
"Tąpies", by Dan Cameron
For nearly the entire three decades since his paintings first became known to the world, Tąpies has remained a mystery to most of those who admire his work. Obviously much of this enigma has to do with the ever -shifting physical and stylistic directions contained in his artwork, but Tąpies takes ambiguity even further, wrapping himself in an almost cryptic reticence that even some of his staunchest proponents find mystifying. On the most immediate level, one feels this from the man himself: reserved yet good-humored, Tąpies does nos brandish his art as a shield against the ravages of time. (view more...)

25 Poemes by Tristan Tzara, illustrated by Hans Arp
"25 Poemes" by Tristan Tzara, illustrated by Hans Arp
The Dada movement developed between 1916 and 1922. Right from the beginning, the most radical attitudes appear. The movement immediately triggered a plain conflict with all the existing forms of art, to all the cultural models that were expressed through these forms of art. But furthermore, no rule, no doctrine was opposed to this big restoration. In his Manifeste dada 1918, Tzara (1896-1963) refuses the theories, the systems and the art that became commerce. Richard Serra, Ecrits et Entretiens 1970-1989
Richard Serra, Ecrits et Entretiens 1970-1989
Richard Serra knows what resistance means. Strength of materials, resistance of the laws of physics, resistance of some ready-made ideas. He always raises the discussions, flushing out conformity and insincerity. The vernacular French has an expression for it: "il n'y va pas par quatre chemins - he makes no bones about it". Indeed, the vagueness of one's mind has never added to the quality of an artwork. (view more...)
