Marlene Dumas by Jan Avgikos
"Marlene Dumas" by Jan Avgikos
Marlene Dumas, a South Africa-born, Amsterdam-based painter, is one of the world's most admired artists, a titan of contemporary painting. Her work recalls the painterly gestures of Expressionism while combining the critical distance of conceptual art with the pleasures of eroticism. Through her delicately painted oil-on-canvas or ink-and-watercolor depictions of the female form as well as portraits of children and erotic scenes, she makes a commentary on the state of painting today. What does it mean to be a woman working within the predominantly male genre of expressionist painting? The artist often depicts women: their expressions, their bodies, their facial typologies, their self-image, and their ideals.

Young Chinese Artists: The Next Generation
Young Chinese Artists: The Next Generation
The new China is the Internet and text messages, fitness clubs and Diet Coke, where the creation of new opportunities is coupled with a loss of tradition. And it is against this backdrop of radical transformation that the Post-70s generation has lived, a reality of new values and an estrangement from older ones, that has shaped the lifestyle and attitude of today’s young adults—and among them, the artists and the art they create.

Francis Bacon: Estampes (Prints), The Alexandre Tacou Collection
"There is a man at the centre of the lithograph. He is probably seated, although it is hard to tell - his legs can't be seen. His mouth is wide open, as he were uttering a cry. His eyes can't be seen either: they are hidden under the shade of a big umbrella ..." Excerpt from the comment by Philippe Piguet of the Offset lithograph, 1971 (after Second version of Paintng 1946, 1971).

The Loggia of Raphael: A Vatican Art Treasure By Nicole Dacos
"The Loggia of Raphael: A Vatican Art Treasure" By Nicole Dacos
The loggia, or colonnaded porch, on the second story of the Apostolic Palace is one of the Vatican's most remarkable art treasures; its decoration, designed by Raphael (1483-1520) and executed by his workshop in 1517-19, epitomizes the spirit of the Italian Renaissance in its synthesis of Christian and classical themes. The thirteen square vaults of Raphael's loggia each contain four frescoes of scenes from the Bible, from the Creation to the Last Supper. Meanwhile, the plasterwork of the other architectural elements is decorated with "grotesques"-fanciful arabesques enlivened with a wide variety of human and animal figures-modeled after ancient Roman wall paintings.
