"History of Modern Art" by H. H. Arnason and Elizabeth C. Mansfield
Comprehensive and insightful, "History of Modern Art: Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Photography" is the definitive source of information on the art of the modern era. This Fourth Edition is a freshly retold story of the art and artists of the last 150 years from modernism's mid-nineteenth-century European beginnings to today's divergent art trends. In the decade that has passed since the publication of the previous edition, art historians have come to recognize that works of art, whether sublimely beautiful or provocatively repelling, are artistic responses made by individuals to life in the real world.(view more...)

"The Aesthetic Economy of Fashion" by Joanne Entwistle
Fashion is bound up with promoting the "new," concerned with constantly changing aesthetics. The favored styles or looks of a season arise out of the work of a vast range of different actors who collectively produce, select, distribute and promote the new ideals, before moving on next season. If fashion is defined, in part, by the incessant requirement to be "new," this requirement means aesthetic qualities are always in motion and, therefore, unstable. How, then, are fashionable commodities stabilized long enough for them to be calculated--i.e., selected, distributed and sold--by those critically placed inside the fashion system?(view more...)

Eclipses et splendeurs de la virgule (Eclipses and magnificences of the comma) Jean Suquet, about Marcel Duchamp
This book summarizes once again the same story, as we tell a legend, as we recite a 'poëme'. By heart. Why to begin again? Why to graze the rut of my standing about for more than half a century on preserves of the lighthearted predecessor who carries the lantern: Marcel Duchamp? I am repeating myself, but, from pages to pages, new arguments are put forward, up to now hardly sketched perpectives are sharpened (...)' Jean Suquet (translation by elandarts).(view more...)
