Japan Donates US$200K To New Orleans Museum
The Japanese region of Hyogo, devastated by a 1995 earthquake. donated US$200,000 to the New Orleans Museum of Art for programs to help cope with the post-Hurricane Katrina devastation. The donation is intended to pay for art therapy sessions, field trips and special programs for children and their families.

Russian Community Shocked By Exhibition
The Russian community in the United States has slammed the "Forbidden Art 2006" exhibition which recently opened at the Sakharov Museum in Moscow because of a suit by a Christian organization that accused the show's curators of defacing religious symbols. The Forbidden Art 2006 display, now open at Moscow's Andrei Sakharov Community Center, displays artworks that were barred from Moscow's mainstream museums and galleries last year.

Art Gallery Wins Legal Battle For Multi-Million-Dollar Masterpieces
After a four-year legal dispute, Beaverbrook Art Gallery won a decision over the ownership rights to Canada´s finest collection of English marterpiece paintings. The Fredericton gallery was been awarded custody of nearly US$100 million worth of artworks that were first donated to the gallery by its founder Max Aitken before his death in 1964.

Center For Feminist Art Opens At Brooklyn Museum
The Brooklyn Museum will open today an 8,300 square-foot (770 square-meter) space dedicated to examining the impact of feminism in the art world. The gallery is named Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art and it is expected to receive many visitors for the full schedule of talks and performances during this weekend.

Smithsonian Museum Underfunded
A voluntary review by a panel of seven prominent museum directors reveal that the Smithsonian Institution´s eight museums are underfund and have seldom lived up to their names. The review released yesterday gives recommendations to strengthen each museum.
A Smithsonian committee affirmed that art museums made a late entry into the Smithsonian and received a proportionally small share of the Smithsonian´s federal funding compared to history and science.

Steven Spielberg Bought Stolen Rockwell Painting
FBI agents found a Norman Rockwell work stolen more than three decades ago in Steven Spielberg's art collection. The painting titled "Russian Schoolroom" was stolen from a gallery in Clayton, Missouri on June 25, 1973. The Oscar-winning filmmaker purchased the painting in 1989 from a legitimate dealer and didn´t know it was stolen until a member of his staff saw the image last week on an FBI web site listing stolen works of art.

Chicago Art Museum Director Resigns
Director of Chicago´s Museum of Contemporary Art, Robet Fitzpatrick, will leave the museum next year because of a personal decision. The Toronto native who arrived at the museum in 1998 has been the longest director in the museum´s history. Fitzpatrick is leaving the museum with a very stable economy and attendance.
