Swedbank Art Award Announces The Nominees For 2008
Swedbank and Kumu Art Museum released the names of nominees for the Swedbank Art Award (formerly known as Hansabank Art Award). 2008 is the first year to include artists from Sweden and Russia in addition to the Baltic countries. The winner will be chosen by an international jury and announced on the 4th of December 2008 at Kumu Art Museum (Tallinn, Estonia) at the opening of the nominees' exhibition. The winner will be presented with prize money of 10 000 Euros.

Queen Victoria's Painting Goes Back To Osborne House After 100 Years
A painting bought by Queen Victoria for £200 in 1841 and which hung in her dressing room at her home, Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, until her death in 1901, will now return to the very same room. "La Siesta", by the German artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter, who later became her favourite portrait artist, was bought at auction yesterday by English Heritage for Osborne House, with support from The Art Fund, the UK's leading independent art charity.

Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Announces Departure Of Director
Paul Warwick Thompson has resigned from Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum effective in August 2009. He has accepted the position of rector (president) of the Royal College of Art in London. Thompson joined Cooper-Hewitt in March 2001. A search committee for Thompson’s position will be formed next month.

Since April 2007, the Kimbell has been working on designs for a new building with celebrated Italian architect Renzo Piano, along with Kendall/Heaton Associates of Houston. The "schematic design" phase is now complete, and the building’s basic position and shape have been established.

Inauguration Of The Human Rights And Alliance Of Civilizations Room
On 18 November 2008, the Secretary-General, together with the King and Queen of Spain, inaugurated the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room, one of the largest conference rooms at the Palais des Nations in Geneva (Secretary General's remarks). The complete renovation and refurbishment of the former Room XX with 754 seats represents one of the biggest ever single donations to the United Nations. The main feature of the renovated room is a ceiling sculpture by the prominent contemporary Spanish artist Miquel Barceló.

Lora Urbanelli Named New Director Of The Montclair Art Museum
The Board of Trustees of the Montclair Art Museum (MAM) announced that Lora Urbanelli has been appointed the Museum’s next Director beginning January 12, 2009. Urbanelli is currently Executive Director of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. She becomes the ninth Director in the 95-year history of MAM, succeeding Patterson Sims, who is departing his post at the end of December.

UI To Proceed With Recovery Of Art Building West
The University of Iowa announced that it will move ahead with repairing and restoring Art Building West, one of two buildings that were home to UI's School of Art and Art History, and also with returning the south end of the former Museum of Art to pre-flood conditions as a temporary quarters for some of its displaced arts programs.

Françoise Sullivan The Second Recipient Of Gershon Iskowitz Prize At The AGO
On November 27 the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Gershon Iskowitz Foundation acknowledge Françoise Sullivan’s contribution to visual arts in Canada. As a recipient of the 2008 Gershon Iskowitz Prize at the AGO, Sullivan will receive a $25,000 award and her work will be featured in a temporary exhibition at the AGO in 2009.

Premier Names National New Media Art Award Winner
Premier Anna Bligh announced Peter Alwast as the winner of the inaugural Premier of Queensland’s National New Media Art Award. Ms Bligh presented the Brisbane-based artist with the $75,000 prize at a special event at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).
