The Menil Engages David Chipperfield To Design Master Site Plan
Contemplating the future expansion and development of the museum and the campus it anchors, Josef Helfenstein, director of the Menil Collection, has announced that David Chipperfield Architects will design the Menil’s master site plan. The commission follows an international search. "It was very clear to us," said Helfenstein, "that David Chipperfield Architects -- with its impressive museum projects around the world and the architects’ clear understanding of the Menil’s extraordinary qualities and spirit -- is the firm to lead us through this process. The creation of a master site plan will lay the foundation for the future of this remarkable place."

Chase Makes $10 Million Grant To Seattle Art Museum
Chase announced a $10 million grant to the Seattle Art Museum (SAM), capping a tradition of support begun by Washington Mutual in 1999. The grant will be paid over the next five years. "This gift demonstrates JPMorgan Chase's commitment to this community," said Mimi Gates, Director of the Seattle Art Museum.

The Kimbell Art Museum Names New Director
The Kimbell Art Museum has appointed Eric McCauley Lee — director of the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati — as its next director. Dr. Lee will become only the fourth director in the Museum’s history and will succeed Timothy Potts, who left in 2007 for the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Dr. Lee will assume his post at the Kimbell in early spring 2009.

Contemporary Art In The Middle East – Symposium At Tate
A major symposium focusing on contemporary art in the Middle East will take place at Tate on 22 and 23 January 2009. This two-day event, which begins at Tate Britain and concludes at Tate Modern, brings together artists, curators and writers to discuss recent developments in contemporary art from the Middle East and its diaspora. With a mix of keynote talks by Derek Gregory (professor of geography, University of British Colombia, Vancouver) Mourid Barghouti (poet and author, I Saw Ramallah), Salah Hassan (professor, Art History, Cornell University) and Shumon Basar (curator, architect and author of Cities from Zero) the symposium comprises five sessions: Defining the Middle East; Writing and Translation; Art Now – Recent Exhibitions; Tradition and Modernity; and The Politics of Space.

OCAD Receives Grant From Target
The Orange County Museum of Art, the premier visual arts museum in Orange County, announces a new partnership with Target that will enrich the lives of the local community through arts education. The grant establishes Target Free Second Sundays, offering free admission to OCMA on the second Sunday of every month through the end of 2009. American Artist Andrew Wyeth, 1917-2009
Artist Andrew Wyeth, who portrayed the hidden melancholy of the people and landscapes of Pennsylvania's Brandywine Valley and coastal Maine in works such as "Christina's World," died early Friday. He was 91. Wyeth died in his sleep at his home in the Philadelphia suburb of Chadds Ford, according to Hillary Holland, a spokeswoman for the Brandywine River Museum.

Valve Failure Causes Humidity Damage At Georgia Museum Of Art
Approximately 25 paintings from the permanent collection at the Georgia Museum of Art appear to have been compromised to varying extents by moisture created when an HVAC valve failed in a storage room. The problem was discovered Sunday morning, Jan. 4, about 10 a.m. when a security supervisor making a routine check noticed elevated humidity in one of the museum’s storage rooms. The valve failure caused humid air to blow into the storage area which is used to house paintings, framed works on paper, folk art, Asian objects and objects of decorative art.

Revised Plans For New Tate Modern Building Submitted For Planning
The revised plans for the new development of Tate Modern by leading international architects Herzog & de Meuron have been submitted to Southwark Council on Friday 9 January 2009. In response to a revised brief and in consultation with artists and curators, the architects have refined designs to create a dramatic new museum for the 21st century. At the heart of the new plans are the unique oil tanks of the former power station which will be retained as raw spaces for art and from which the new building will rise.

Sheldon Museum of Art Reopened To The Public
Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln reopened with its normal hours yesterday, January 06. The museum was closed over the weekend after vandals damaged four panes of glass in the Great Hall's east wall. No artwork was damaged.
