| Smithsonian Museums Have Gone MobileUntil recently, visitors to Smithsonian museums on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., faced an unexpected challenge: they could not use their cell phones unless they were near a window or door. The solid construction of the Smithsonian’s historic buildings made it nearly impossible for cell phone signals to penetrate the walls. | Statement By The MET On Accident Involving Picasso's The ActorAn important painting by Pablo Picasso was accidentally damaged in the galleries of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Friday afternoon, January 22. A visitor attending a class lost her balance, falling onto Picasso's "The Actor", a large, Rose-period painting that was painted in winter 1904-1905. Her new work, created especially for the neoclassical Duveen galleries at the heart of Tate Britain, will be unveiled on 28 June 2010 and will be on display until 3 January 2011. | Getty Museum Director Michael Brand Steps DownJames N. Wood, president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, announced that Dr. Michael Brand has elected to step down as director of the J. Paul Getty Museum at the end of January. He will be available to serve as a consultant through the end of the summer. Brand joined the Getty in December 2005 with a five-year contract. Wood said that David Bomford, associate director for collections at the Museum, will serve as interim director of the Museum until Brand’s successor is named.(view more...) |
