New Modern & Contemporary South Asian & Middle East Art Department Launched At Bonhams
Because of the growth of buying interest in Modern and Contemporary South Asian and Middle Eastern Art, Bonhams has created a new specialist department to service this area of collecting. The new department evolved out of the Indian and Islamic Department, headed by Claire Penhallurick, which has grown the Modern and Contemporary area so successfully that the time has come to establish a stand-alone specialist area.

Smithsonian National Postal Museum Launch A New Online Collection
The Smithsonian National Postal Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian have collaborated to create a beautiful digital collection called "The American Indian on Stamps: Profiles in Leadership, Accomplishment and Cultural Celebration." The collection can only be viewed at www.arago.si.edu. It features 40 images of the approximately 70 stamps that the U.S. Postal Service has issued of Native Americans since 1875. The unique technology of the Web site enables viewers to magnify images to almost the size of their computer screen and see details that a magnifying glass cannot provide.

Tate Britain To Re-Stage William Blake’s 1809 Solo Exhibition
In April 2009, Tate Britain will unveil the first display devoted to William Blake’s only one-man exhibition, reuniting nine of the surviving works two hundred years after they went on display in May 1809. The original exhibition was Blake’s most significant attempt to create a public reputation for himself as a painter and provided a vital insight into the artist’s self-image and ambitions. A new edition of Blake’s Descriptive Catalogue (1809) will be published by Tate Publishing to coincide with the display.

Winning Project For The Kunsthaus Zürich Extension Presented
David Chipperfield’s winning project for the Kunsthaus Zürich extension is a striking formulation of the plan for a 21st-century museum to meet the demands of art and the general public alike. The jury has now recommended that the project be further developed. From 16 December 2008 until 11 January 2009, Chipperfield’s design will be shown at the Kunsthaus Zürich together with those of the runners-up – Gigon/Guyer, Max Dudler and Grazioli/Krischanitz – as well as all other submissions.

Asheville Art Museum Receives National Endowment For The Arts Grant
The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to announce it has received $40,000 in grant funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support the development and presentation of the exciting upcoming exhibition Ruth Asawa: Drawing in Space opening September 18, 2009 on view through January 3, 2010. The Asheville Art Museum was the only art museum in North Carolina to receive an Access to Artistic excellence grant this year.

An Exceptional Group Of Imperial Seals To Headline Sotheby's Asian Art Sale
The next auction of Asian Art at Sotheby's Paris will take the form of a two-session sale on December 18. The first session, subtitled Marques d’Empereurs (Marks of Emperors), includes a number of objects acquired by Emile Guimet – founder of the Paris Museum of Asian Art at the start of the 20th century – and bequeathed to his descendents. They include an exceptional group of imperial seals from the reigns of Emperor Qianlong (1736-95), Emperor Jiaqing (1796-1820) and Dowager Empress Cixi (1835-1908).

Canada’s First Major Museum Exhibition Of Street Art At The ICC, ROM
On Saturday, December 13, 2008, the Institute for Contemporary Culture (ICC) at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) presents "Housepaint, Phase 2: Shelter", the first exhibition on the subject of street art in a major Canadian museum. Ten colourful canvas houses exuberantly painted by ten of Canada’s leading street artists draw attention to social problems of poverty and homelessness. In addition, over the course of the exhibition, five artists will respond to the previous installations by each creating a new work in the ICC’s Roloff Beny Gallery. Curated by Devon Ostrom of them.ca, Housepaint, Phase 2: Shelter will be on display until June 2009, when the canvas houses will be auctioned, with proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity Toronto, a charitable organization devoted to the elimination of poverty housing.
