Museum Of Fine Arts Receives Gift Of Cagnetti Pendant
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has received a gift from an anonymous donor, of a pendant by Italian jeweler Andrea Cagnetti. Well-known in Europe for his stunning execution of the ancient goldsmithing technique of granulation, Cagnetti’s work is just starting to be known in the United States.

Treasures From The V&A Museum On View At The Met On May 20
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London holds one of the world’s finest collections of European decorative arts. Thirty-five of its masterpieces will be on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning May 20, 2008, in the exhibition "Medieval and Renaissance Treasures from the Victoria and Albert Museum", while the V&A prepares a new suite of galleries for its collection. Dating from 300 to 1600, the exhibition will include superb examples of sculpture, metalwork, ceramics, and glass that are rarely lent. Most have never been on view in New York.

Mandela’s birthday will be celebrated on Friday 27 June with a concert in London Hyde Park, hosted by Will Smith. Great Park Board Adopts Outdoor Performing Arts And Cultural Event Series
The Orange County Great Park Corporation Board approved the themes and programs for the Great Park Summer 2008, an outdoor performing arts and cultural event series that will kick-off the opening of the 27.5-acre Great Park Preview Park. The first community event, "Festival of Flight," debuts the summer programs beginning July 12, 2008. The event will mark the Great Park's third anniversary with special exhibits, activities and performances.

Philip Haas Commissioned By Kimbell Art Museum To Create Short Film
The Kimbell Art Museum has commissioned distinguished director Philip Haas to make a short film inspired by Annibale Carracci’s "The Butcher’s Shop" (c. 1582), a remarkable early Baroque genre painting in the Museum’s collection. Through a series of sensuous and poetic moving images, combined with telling touches of narrative, Haas conjures up the world of the butchers, the world of the artist, and the encounter that led to the painting. The Sonnabend Gallery in New York will host a preview from April 17 to 26, 2008.

First Lady Announces 2008 Governor's Awards For the Arts
Judge Marjorie O. Rendell, First Lady of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, today said that Williamsport and its historic Community Arts Center will be the venue for the 2008 Governor’s Awards for the Arts, Nov. 12. "On behalf of the Governor, we are excited to continue Pennsylvania’s long-standing tradition of celebrating artistic achievements," said the First Lady, who was joined in the announcement by Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Executive Director Philip Horn and Marilyn Santarelli, one of 15 gubernatorial appointees to the council. "When we return to host the Governor’s Awards for the Arts, Governor Rendell will proudly proclaim Williamsport the ‘Cultural Capital of the Commonwealth’ for the day."

A jury of six members announced that Zaha Hadid, London, has won the architectural competition to develop a design for a proposed museum in Vilnius. The architectural competition is part of a feasibility study undertaken by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and The State Hermitage Museum. The directors of both institutions participated in the jury selection process.

Sotheby's Hong Kong Auction Brought US$17M
Yesterday in an overflowing salesroom, on the second day of Sotheby’s Spring 2008 sales at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Sotheby’s offering of the first part of the Estella Collection, the largest and most important collection of Chinese Contemporary Art ever to appear at auction, brought US$17,887,230, far exceeding its estimates. The first offering of the Collection, which was comprised of over 108 works and included seminal pieces by prominent artists such as Zhang Xiaogang, Ai Weiwei, Cai Guo-Qiang and Xu Bing, as well works by emerging artists, was highlighted by the centerpiece of the Estella Collection, Zhang Xiaogang’s "Bloodline: The Big Family No. 3", which commanded US$6,061,619, far exceeding its high estimate, and set a record for the artist at auction.

On April 10th Bonhams, the international fine art auction house, will sell this fascinating collection, its star lot being a dagger that once belonged to Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor (reigned 1627 –1657), who built the Taj Mahal, as a memorial to his beloved wife. The elegant and understated personal dagger carried by Shah Jahan with its fine gold inscriptions and decoration, dated to 1629-30, is expected to attract bids of around £300,000 – 500,000.
