Threat Of Violence Against SFAI Forces School To Close Exhibition
In response to a series of violent threats by animal rights extremists, the San Francisco Art Institute announced that the public discussion on Adel Abdessemed’s exhibition "Don’t Trust Me", scheduled for Monday, 31 March, has been cancelled. For the same reasons, the exhibition itself, which was temporarily suspended on Wednesday, 26 March, has now been permanently closed.

Carnegie Hall announced that Terry J. Lundgren (Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Macy's, Inc.) will receive the Carnegie Hall Medal of Excellence. In recognition of his outstanding leadership in arts philanthropy, the award will be presented to Mr. Lundgren by The Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, at a gala benefit at The Waldorf=Astoria on Monday, April 7. Newswoman Deborah Norville is the Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. Legendary vocalist Tony Bennett will perform as part of the evening's program.

Asian Art Museum Appoints Jay Xu As Director
It is with great pleasure that the Asian Art Museum announces the appointment of Jay Jie Xu as the museum’s new Director. Mr. Xu begins his position on June 15, 2008. He succeeds Emily J. Sano, who retired in January 2008 after fifteen years of service to the museum. Mr. Xu, 45, has been the Pritzker Chairman, Department of Asian and Ancient Art at The Art Institute of Chicago since 2006, after serving as Pritzker Curator of Asian Art since 2003.

Dainichi Nyorai Sculpture Sold For US$14M At Christie´s
At the sale of Japanese and Korean Art, a newly discovered wood sculpture of Dainichi Nyorai, the supreme Buddha, attributed to the sculptor Unkei achieved $14,377,000, exceeding its presale estimate of $1,500,000-2,500,000. It set new world auction records including record for Japanese art, and any Asian work of art sold in New York. This price largely surpasses the previous record of $1.76 million realized by a Rakuchu Rakugai screen, sold in October 1990 at Christie’s New York. The Dainichi Nyorai Buddha was bought by the Japanese company, Mitsukoshi Co Ltd.

One of Britain’s most generous philanthropists and discerning collectors, the late Simon Sainsbury assembled throughout his lifetime one of the finest private British collections of the 20th century which will be offered at a landmark single-owner auction at Christie’s on Wednesday 18 June 2008. A further selection of Impressionist paintings from the collection will be offered at the auctions of Impressionist and Modern Art on 24 and 25 June 2008. Highlights of the collection include an unprecedented collection of English furniture, one of the finest collections of early English pottery ever assembled and paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse and Paul Signac. The Cummer Receives US$1M Grant from Bank of America
The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens celebrated two major developments in the Facilities and Grounds Master Plan and Five-year Strategic plan. Susan Walker, Florida President, Bank of America, presented the museum with a $1 million grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. This lead corporate gift accelerates the museum's restoration and construction plans to preserve the historic Woman's Club of Jacksonville, to be renamed the new Edward W. Lane, Jr. Building. When complete this landmark building will provide additional civic space for museum lectures, programs and events.
