MIA Appoints New Head Of Prints And Drawings
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) announced the appointment of Thomas E. Rassieur as its new John E. Andrus III Curator of Prints and Drawings. In this capacity he will lead the MIA’s Prints and Drawings Department, a collection of some 40,000 prints and drawings ranging from 14th century illuminated manuscripts to works by contemporary artists. Rassieur comes to the MIA from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), where he began as an assistant curator of Prints and Drawings in 1999, and served most recently as the Pamela and Peter Voss Curator since 2008.

The Cleveland Museum of Art and Italy’s Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities have concluded an agreement concerning antiquities in the Museum’s collection and a mutual cultural and research exchange that opens a new era of cooperation between the Museum and Italy. After nearly two years of discussions, the Cleveland Museum of Art has agreed to transfer 14 works from its antiquities collection to the Italian Ministry.

The exhibition Van Dongen - A Fauve in the City, presented from January 22 to April 19, 2009 at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, is the first major retrospective of the work of Kees Van Dongen (1877-1968) in North America. The exhibition, which brings together some 200 works, including over a hundred paintings, forty rare drawings, prints and other archival documents and photographs as well as for the first time, a dozen Fauvist ceramics, will illustrate the influential role Van Dongen played in the early twentieth century as the only portraitist among the Fauves.

Fairchild will open Mark di Suvero at Fairchild, an outdoor exhibition of five massive sculptures including the never before exhibited Olompali, during the famed international art fair, Art Basel Miami Beach. The exhibition will be on view at Fairchild, South Florida’s oldest cultural institution and the world’s leading tropical botanic garden, from December 6, 2008 through May 31, 2009, at 10901 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables, Fla. The sculptures in the exhibition are on loan from the Mark di Suvero Collection.

Anderson, The Melvin & Bren Simon Director and CEO of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, announced that the IMA is moving forward with the acquisition of the landmark Miller House and Garden in Columbus, Indiana. One of the country’s most highly-regarded examples of mid-century Modernist residences, the Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape design by Daniel Urban Kiley.

Kidnapped "Policeman" Still At Large. Citizens Asked To Help Locate Artwork
Stamford experienced a theft of a bronze sculpture on loan to the city this summer, and the piece has yet to be located. The sculpture, by artist Seward Johnson, depicting a realistic lifesized policeman in bronze, was stolen in August. A similar surprising theft of a sculpture by artist Johnson – this time a bronze photographer – occurred this summer in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Recently, that case came to a happy conclusion with the recovery of the sculpture through an anonymous tip. The sculpture was retrieved from a field and is now being restored to mint condition by The Sculpture Foundation, curators for the collection of Johnson sculptures.

UW Art Museum Receives Major Donation
The University of Wyoming Art Museum has been selected to receive a gift of 50 works of art from New York collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel. The gifts, received with the help of the National Gallery of Art, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, are part of a national gifts program titled "The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States." It will distribute 2,500 works from the Vogels' collection of contemporary art throughout the nation, with 50 works going to a selected art institution in each of the 50 states.
