Muskegon Museum of Art: Gems in Middle America
The crown jewel in a small town aside from its row of Victorian houses or civil war canon or a special piece of architecture is usually its art museum. Frida Kahlo At SFMOMA
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is holding a major exhibit of Frida Kahlo’s work. Ordinarily I’m not interested in writing about such a famous and much written about artist, but, in Frida’s case I have to make an exception. Her show at the SFMOMA is in a league of its own. There are 50 paintings in all in the exhibit and in a body they pack quite a punch. I have seen isolated paintings of Kahlo’s work over the years and have never been especially moved until this exhibit. Being a painter myself and an abstract one at that I tended to label Frida as a surrealist painter. A little short sighted on my part. Frida says, "they thought I was a surrealist but I wasn’t. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality". After seeing so many major works of this artist under one roof, putting her in a labeled box won’t do.

Nico and the Navigators are back as absolute protagonists of that Image Theatre able to win spaces of thought, with reflexions born from the same social drama analysis already examined by Victor Turner in the essay Performance in Postmodern Culture and able to show the public a creative approach half-way between improvisation, and absurd and maniacal rituals.
